AIDS Resource Center Ohio Applauds New Sexuality Education Tool Kit
Evidence-Based Resources Will Help Curb New HIV Infections and Other STIs
May 1, 2012 - DAYTON, OH—AIDS Resource Center Ohio (ARC Ohio) CEO Bill Hardy today applauded the launch of a new on-line sexuality education toolkit, designed and hosted by the Cleveland-area Collaborative for Comprehensive School-Age Health.
“This Tool Kit offers an impressive array of resources, and will equip students, parents, teachers, school administrators, and local citizens with the tools they need to implement effective, evidence-based programming to promote sexual health among Ohio’s youth and young adults,” Hardy noted. “It pulls together and makes available the best science available on how to reduce risk of sexually transmitted infection and teen pregnancy, and it addresses the needs of all young people—heterosexual and gay/lesbian. It’s just the resource we’ve been waiting for.”
The Collaborative for Comprehensive School-Age Health is a network of Northeast Ohio organizations that promotes age-appropriate, medically accurate health education to increase responsible decision-making. In recent years other local and national organizations and school districts have contacted the Collaborative, seeking assistance in the development of policies and programs that will support healthy decision-making. The Tool Kit was developed in response to those many requests. Marcia Egbert, chair of the Collaborative and Senior Program Officer for The George Gund Foundation, added, “We are pleased to be able to provide information and answers for the many individuals and groups who contact us wondering where to start when it comes to their local community.”
Hardy’s group sees the Tool Kit as an essential addition to the fight against HIV/AIDS in Ohio. As a large, comprehensive HIV/AIDS service, prevention education, and advocacy organization serving all of Ohio’s 88 counties through nine offices in strategic locations around the state, ARC Ohio has been educating Ohioans about HIV risk for over 25 years. “But despite the many people we reach every year through our education programs,” noted Hardy, “it’s just a drop in the bucket in terms of the total number of people still yet to be reached. We need evidence-based, age-appropriate sexuality in every community, in every school, across the state. Not only does comprehensive sex ed work to reduce risk, but parents and teachers both express consistent and overwhelming support for such programs.”
The Tool Kit can be accessed at www.ccsah.org, and will be regularly updated so that it remains timely and accurate.

Longtime HIV/AIDS Activist Kevin Sullivan Dies
Served as Executive Director of Ohio AIDS Coalition for 10 Years
Columbus, OH— Kevin Sullivan, longtime HIV/AIDS activist, advocate and Executive Director of the Ohio AIDS Coalition, died September 5. He was five days short of his 61st birthday.
"This is sad news, and a deep loss to our community and our work," said Bill Hardy, CEO of AIDS Resource Center Ohio. "For the past decade Kevin has been front-and-center in our public policy and advocacy efforts in Ohio and nationwide," Hardy continued.
AIDS Resource Center Ohio receives CDC Award to Reduce HIV Transmisison in Central Ohio
Activities will focus on young gay/bisexual men of color
Dayton, OH- A new grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) aimed at reducing HIV transmission in Central Ohio has just been awarded to AIDS Resource Center Ohio (ARC Ohio).
The multi-year grant will support the activities of the new Greater Columbus Mpowerment Project. The initiative's activities will focus on empowering young gay and bisexual men of color to reduce their sexual risk taking and establish healthy peer relationships.

AIDS Resource Center Ohio Names New Director of the Ohio AIDS Coalition
Former OAC Director of Programs, Tyler TerMeer, returns to the Ohio HIV Community
Dayton, OH - AIDS Resource Center Ohio (ARC Ohio) today announced that Tyler Andrew TerMeer has been named Director of the Ohio AIDS Coalition (OAC). TerMeer comes to the OAC from the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD), based in Washington, DC, where he served the nation's chief state health agency staff who have programmatic responsibility for administering HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis healthcare, prevention, education, and supportive service programs funded by state and federal governments. As a manager of HIV prevention and health equity, he led NASTAD’s call-to-action in addressing the HIV and STD crises among gay and bisexual men of all races and ethnicities in the United States. TerMeer brings 8 years of experience in HIV Prevention and Care and Treatment and Public Policy. He previously served as the OAC Director of Programs from 2004 – 2008.

ODH announces changes to Ryan White Program
Many HIV-Positive Residents Lose Medication Benefits
Columbus, OH- Effective July 1, 2010, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) today announced changes to the Ryan White Program, which provides assistance to over 1,500 residents living with HIV/AIDS in AIDS Resource Center Ohio’s 36-county region. Blaming increasing enrollments, escalating costs and a projected deficit of $16.4 million at the state-level, the changes will affect non-core medical services as well as eligibility requirements, the institution of a waiting list and a reduction in the medications offered in the state-run drug assistance program.
